Body Image and Self-Esteem

Is your body image impacting your self-esteem?

Each day we are bombarded by a range of images and expectations from the media, social media, peers, family and colleagues.  This can place an enormous amount of pressure on us and may result in a range of mental health presentations, including:

  • depression

  • anxiety

  • self-harm

  • suicidal ideation

  • eating disorders.

Body image refers to our shape, weight and judgement of our body which may result in:

  • becoming dissatisfied with the way we look

  • believing our lives would be better if we looked a certain way

  • comparing ourselves with images we see in the media and social media

Being unhappy about how we look impacts:

  • our self-esteem

  • our self-concept

  • engaging in unhealthy behaviour

  • disordered eating

  • excessive exercising

Evolving Minds works with a number of presentations including:

  • Body Image

  • Disordered Eating

  • Anorexia Nervosa

  • Bulimia Nervosa

  • Binge Eating Disorder

  • Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorders

Early intervention focuses on the link between self-esteem, self-acceptance and well-being as well as the link between anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. With the Butterfly Foundation estimating approximately 1,000,000 people in Australia are impacted by eating disorders or disordered eating, providing early intervention is more important than ever.

Evolving Minds has extensive experience working with children, adolescents and adults whose body image affects how they see themselves and their world.  Through individualised treatment plans, we have been successful in helping clients re-establish a positive relationship with their body, self-esteem and self-concept, which is one of our great pleasures.
