Bulimia Nervosa
Support at Evolving Minds Counselling

Bulimia Nervosa is a serious mental health condition characterised by cycles of dieting, binge eating, and compensatory behaviours such as vomiting, over-exercising, or the use of laxatives. Individuals often present at a normal or slightly above-average weight which can make the illness difficult to detect. Recognising the signs and understanding the underlying causes is an important step toward recovery.

Causes and Influences

Bulimia Nervosa can be triggered by dieting and reinforced by social, cultural, and genetic factors. A strong emphasis on body shape and weight in self-evaluation often contributes to the development of disordered eating patterns.

Recognising the Signs

Signs that may indicate Bulimia Nervosa include frequent weight fluctuations, persistent dieting or food avoidance, unexplained trips to the bathroom after meals, symptoms of depression or anxiety, rigid food rules or rituals, reduced social engagement around food, and negative self-perception or self-loathing. Early recognition and support are essential for recovery.

Facing the challenges of Bulimia Nervosa can be difficult, although recovery is possible with the right support. At Evolving Minds Counselling, our clinicians are trained in evidence-based eating disorder treatments and are credentialed with the Australian and New Zealand Academy for Eating Disorders (ANZAED). We work with you to develop a personalised approach to support recovery and a healthier relationship with food and self-worth.
