Treatment for Bulimia Nervosa

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology

Bulimia Nervosa is a complex and often misunderstood eating disorder, characterised by repeated episodes of binge eating followed by behaviours intended to prevent weight gain, such as self-induced vomiting, over-exercising, or using laxatives. Bulimia often develops after periods of restrictive dieting and is maintained by a combination of genetic, psychological and sociocultural factors.

Unlike some other eating disorders, bulimia does not always result in noticeable weight changes, which can make it harder to detect and delay access to treatment. Early recognition and intervention are essential in supporting recovery and reducing the risk of physical and psychological complications.

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology, we focus on compassionate, evidence-based care that addresses both the behavioural patterns and underlying emotional factors associated with bulimia.  Our clinicians are credentialed with the Australian and New Zealand Academy for Eating Disorders (ANZAED) and have extensive experience treating adolescents and adults across a range of mental health presentations.

Signs that may indicate bulimia include rigid food rules, preoccupation with body image, avoiding meals with others, repeated trips to the bathroom after eating, low mood, anxiety, or shame after eating.

Treatment is tailored to your individual needs and may include therapies such as CBT-E, DBT-E, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), EMDR, and mindfulness-based interventions.
