Family Dispute

Divorce and Separation

Evolving Minds Counselling are very experienced working with families who have separated and acknowledge the difficulties that an arise due to grief and loss around the breakdown of relationships.

Following separation and divorce, research has found children to be twice as likely to experience emotional, social, behavioural and school problems.  In fact, according to the Family Court of Australia “children who are placed in the middle of their parents’ dispute (by either parent) are more likely to be angry, stressed, depressed or anxious, and have poorer relationships with their parents than children who are not used in this way”.  Children often get put in the middle of disputes between parents and when this occurs, children can feel alone, confused, guilty, sad, angry and worthless.

It is important to note there is no legal or ethical requirement for counsellors to contact both parents when commencing counselling as the 2006 Act states  “To avoid doubt, this section [65DAC(4)] does not require any other person to establish, before acting on a decision about the child communicated by one of these persons, that the decision has been made jointly.”

Evolving Minds Counselling encourages both parents to be involved in their child’s well-being and at the initial appointment will seek information as to how counselling will best serve the child/or children, especially when parental relationships are hostile.   When working with children the best interests of the child will be considered at all times as mental health counselling aims to ease the pain.

We provide a range of psychological therapies, including play, art and theraplay informed practices to help children process difficult emotions.
