Understanding Perinatal and Postnatal Depression

Perinatal depression refers to mental health challenges experienced during pregnancy and up to a year after childbirth. Postnatal depression (also called postpartum depression) occurs in the months following birth. These conditions are more common than many realise, affecting up to 1 in 7 mothers and 1 in 10 fathers.
Symptoms can include:
-
Anxiety or depression during or after pregnancy
-
Difficulty adjusting to parenthood
-
Increased stress or low parental confidence
-
Challenges with identity, body image, or relationships
-
Coping with complications or circumstances surrounding birth

While these experiences can feel isolating, they are treatable.
What Contributes to Perinatal and Postnatal Depression?

Several factors may increase the likelihood of perinatal depression, including a history of mental health concerns, relationship challenges, insufficient support, or complications during pregnancy or birth. Regardless of your circumstances, seeking help is a vital step toward healing.
