Trauma-informed therapy recognises that distressing experiences can affect the nervous system, emotional regulation, relationships and sense of safety. Rather than focusing only on symptoms, trauma therapy considers how past experiences can influence present patterns, including patterns in relationships, attachment, and automatic threat response.
This approach to trauma therapy supports the nervous system, helping reduce symptoms of anxiety, emotional overwhelm, and trauma-related patterns while building a greater sense of safety and stability. Trauma counselling can also support people experiencing ongoing stress, relationship difficulties, or feeling stuck in patterns linked to earlier experiences.
Trauma-informed practice is grounded in safety, collaboration and choice. Therapy moves at a pace that respects each person’s readiness, history and goals, integrating both psychological and body-based approaches such as somatic therapy and DBR where appropriate.
What Trauma-Informed Therapy Involves
Trauma-informed therapy may include:
-
developing emotional regulation skills
-
building a sense of safety within the body
-
increasing awareness of bodily sensations and nervous system responses
-
understanding patterns shaped by past experiences
-
strengthening boundaries and communication
-
gradually processing distressing memories where appropriate
Trauma therapy focuses on supporting stability, understanding and integration, without unnecessarily revisiting distressing experiences.
Evidence-Based Trauma Approaches We Use
Our clinicians draw on evidence-based trauma therapies, which may include:
