A Happier, Healthier You
Adolescence is a time when young people strive to find their own identities, come to terms with their changing bodies, changing relationships and develop the ability to critically reason. It is also a time of confusion, stress and conflict as they start to take on adult roles and responsibilities and rely more on peers for support.
Using a range of therapies including art therapy, we will help you “re-frame” your reactions and provide you with valuable tools to cope with life’s obstacles. Read further to learn how we work with specific conditions.
Trauma impacts a person's ability to self-regulate
Evolving Minds has extensive experience working with children, adolescents and adults who have experienced trauma, including:
Emotional and/or psychological abuse
Vicarious trauma (eg trauma from witnessing or hearing about another person's trauma)
During these episodes both a physiological and psychological response is felt can result in a person being unable to self-regulate, which may make them appear angry, withdrawn, hyper-aroused or hypo-aroused. Memory can also be significantly impaired by trauma due to feeling unsafe and flashbacks of the traumatic event can occur. During these time the brain’s cortex is unable to think, plan or reason.
Someone who experiences toxic stress has been found to have increased hormone levels which can result in a decrease in brain size and changes in the brain's ability to make connections.
Trauma therapy takes into consideration the cumulative impact of trauma and uses appropriate trauma informed strategies to reinstate feelings of safety and help create healthy ways to self-regulate.
Our clinicians have post-graduate qualifications in trauma having completed a Graduate Certificate in Developmental Trauma. We also keep up to date with the latest research and attend training regularly to ensure we remain highly skilled in this area.
