Understanding Anger and Emotional Regulation

Psychological Therapy in Menai and the Sutherland Shire

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors provide evidence-based therapy for anger and emotional regulation difficulties for children, adolescents and adults across the Sutherland Shire. Sessions are available in person at our Menai practice and via secure online appointments.

Anger is a core human emotion. It can signal that a boundary has been crossed, something feels unfair, or an important need hasn’t been recognised. When expressed constructively, anger can support clear communication, assertiveness and self-respect.

When anger becomes intense, unpredictable or difficult to manage, it may strain relationships, affect school or workplace performance and contribute to stress and regret.

Anger May Present As:

  • emotional outbursts or verbal aggression

  • irritability or low frustration tolerance

  • withdrawing or shutting down during conflict

  • resentment that builds over time

  • reactive behaviour in relationships

  • challenging behaviour in children or adolescents

  • anger linked to stress, trauma or family conflict

  • difficulty calming once triggered

For some people, anger may occur alongside anxiety, trauma, depression or relationship stress.

Anger Across the Lifespan

In children, anger may appear as meltdowns, behavioural outbursts or difficulty managing frustration.

In adolescents, it may present as conflict at home, school-related stress or heightened emotional reactivity.

In adults, anger may show up as relationship tension, workplace conflict, burnout or longstanding patterns of reactivity.

When to Consider Therapy

You may wish to consider therapy if anger is:

  • affecting your relationships

  • impacting work or school performance

  • contributing to repeated conflict

  • leading to regret or shame after outbursts

  • difficult to manage once triggered

  • connected to past experiences or stress

Early intervention can help prevent patterns from becoming more entrenched.
