Dialectical Behaviour Therapy
Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology | Menai and Sutherland Shire
At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, we provide Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) for adolescents and adults across the Sutherland Shire. Sessions are available in person at our Menai practice and via secure online appointments across Australia.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based psychological approach designed to help people manage intense emotions, reduce impulsive behaviours and strengthen interpersonal effectiveness. DBT was originally developed to support individuals experiencing significant emotional dysregulation and has since been adapted for a wide range of presentations.
DBT is based on the idea that two things can be true at once: we can accept ourselves as we are while also working toward meaningful change.
What DBT Focuses On
DBT develops practical skills across four core areas:
-
Emotional regulation - understanding and managing intense emotions
-
Distress tolerance - coping effectively during crisis or high stress
-
Interpersonal effectiveness - communicating needs clearly and maintaining boundaries
-
Mindfulness – strengthening awareness of thoughts, emotions and physical sensations
These skills help reduce reactivity, improve relationships and increase confidence in navigating everyday challenges.
When DBT May Be Helpful
DBT may be appropriate for people experiencing:
-
emotional overwhelm or mood instability
-
patterns of impulsivity
-
difficulty managing anger
-
relationship conflict
-
self-criticism or shame
-
trauma-related emotional reactivity
-
eating disorders or body image distress
DBT may also be integrated within therapy for Anger and Emotional Regulation, Anxiety, Trauma, ADHD, Eating Disorders, or relational difficulties explored in Couples Counselling.
Our Approach to DBT
At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology, DBT is delivered within a structured, collaborative framework. Therapy balances validation and change, helping clients build practical skills while developing deeper insight into emotional and relational patterns.
Sessions are tailored to each person’s goals, developmental stage and clinical presentation. DBT skills may be integrated alongside other evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), or Trauma Informed Therapy where appropriate.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy is available at our Menai practice for clients across the Sutherland Shire and southern Sydney, as well as via secure online sessions.
