What is Dialectical Behaviour Therapy?
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based psychological approach designed to help people manage intense emotions, respond differently to impulsive behaviours, and improve relationships. It is often used when emotions feel overwhelming, difficult to manage, or lead to reactions that feel hard to control.
DBT is based on the idea that two things can be true at once: you can accept yourself as you are while also working toward meaningful change.
DBT develops practical skills across four core areas:
-
emotional regulation
-
distress tolerance
-
interpersonal effectiveness
-
mindfulness
These skills are designed to support more balanced responses, improve relationships, and increase confidence in managing everyday challenges.
What does DBT help with?
DBT can be helpful for:
-
emotional overwhelm or mood instability
-
patterns of impulsivity
-
self-criticism or shame
-
relationship conflict
-
difficulty managing intense emotions in everyday situations
DBT is often used alongside other approaches, particularly when working with emotional regulation or eating disorder counselling. DBT skills are also integrated within evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and trauma-informed approaches where appropriate.
