School Refusal and School Anxiety Counselling
in Sydney and the Sutherland Shire.

When your child or teenager is refusing to attend school, becoming distressed in the mornings, or finding it harder to stay engaged throughout the day, it can be hard to know how to help.

For many families, school refusal builds over time. What starts as occasional reluctance can develop into ongoing distress, with attending or remaining at school becoming increasingly difficult.

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology, we provide school refusal and school avoidance counselling for children, teenagers and families across Sydney and the Sutherland Shire. Our clinicians work to understand what is happening for your child and develop practical strategies to support their gradual return to school.

What does school refusal look like?

School refusal and school avoidance can present in different ways, including:

  • Refusing or avoiding school attendance

  • Emotional distress in the mornings

  • Difficulty separating from home or caregivers

  • Physical symptoms such as nausea, dizziness or racing heart

  • Panic, overwhelm or shutdown responses

  • Difficulty entering or remaining in the classroom

  • Increasing reluctance the night before or on Sunday evenings

Understanding School Refusal and School Anxiety

School anxiety can occur even when a child or teenager is still attending school. They may experience increasing worry before school, physical symptoms, difficulty separating from caregivers, anxiety about particular classes or social situations, or become overwhelmed by the demands of the school day.

For some children, school anxiety can contribute to increasing avoidance and eventually school refusal. This may be related to what is happening at school, what the child is experiencing internally, or a combination of factors.

Contributing factors may include:

School refusal is also common among neurodivergent children and adolescents, including those with ADHD, autism, sensory sensitivities or executive functioning differences.

How does school refusal counselling help?

School refusal counselling can help children and teenagers better understand the anxiety or other difficulties affecting school attendance and develop practical strategies to manage these difficulties. Together, your child and their clinician will explore what may be contributing to school avoidance and identify strategies to support their individual needs.

School refusal counselling may involve:

  • Understanding the anxiety, thoughts or experiences contributing to school avoidance

  • Developing practical strategies to manage anxiety and overwhelm

  • Reducing avoidance and gradually building confidence around school attendance

  • Supporting emotional regulation and coping strategies

  • Working with parents to support consistency at home

  • Developing a gradual return to school, in collaboration with the school where appropriate

Depending on what is most appropriate for the individual child, our psychologists and counsellors draw on a range of evidence-based therapies, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and play-based approaches for younger children.

Some families may also benefit from family counselling where additional support with family communication or consistency at home would be helpful.
