Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors provide Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for children, adolescents and adults across the Sutherland Shire. Appointments are available in person at our Menai practice and via secure online therapy.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is an evidence-based psychological approach that focuses on the connection between thoughts, emotions and behaviours. It helps people identify unhelpful thinking patterns and develop practical ways of responding.

CBT is often used when patterns such as ongoing worry (removed comma), negative self-talk, avoidance, or emotional reactions feel hard to shift.

What to expect in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

The focus of CBT is to identify what is getting in the way of day-to-day functioning.

Sessions may include:

  • identifying patterns in thoughts, emotions and behaviours

  • recognising unhelpful beliefs or thinking styles

  • testing out new ways of responding

  • reducing avoidance

  • gradual exposure where appropriate

  • developing emotional regulation skills

Depending on your needs, this may involve building awareness of thinking patterns, gradually approaching situations that have been avoided, and developing practical ways to respond. In some cases, structured approaches such as gradual exposure or behavioural strategies may be used.

When Cognitive Behavioural Therapy may be helpful

CBT can be helpful if you are experiencing:

  • anxiety, including worry, panic or avoidance

  • low mood or depression

  • intrusive thoughts or obsessive patterns

  • phobias or fears that feel difficult to manage

  • stress or burnout

  • trauma

How Cognitive Behavioural Therapy works

CBT focuses on how patterns of thinking and behaviour influence emotional responses.

By identifying and changing these patterns, CBT helps people respond differently to situations, reducing distress and improving day-to-day functioning.

Over time, people often notice a reduction in distress and an increased ability to respond more flexibly.

CBT is one of several evidence based therapies used in counselling, and may be recommended depending on your needs and goals. You can learn more about our evidence based therapies here.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy in the Sutherland Shire

Our psychologists and counsellors provide CBT in Menai and across the Sutherland Shire, including Miranda, Caringbah, Engadine, and surrounding suburbs.

Depending on each person's needs, CBT is often part of broader therapy, particularly alongside anxiety counselling, OCD counselling, or trauma counselling.
