What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based psychological approach that focuses on the connection between thoughts, emotions and behaviours. It helps people identify unhelpful thinking patterns and develop practical ways of responding.

CBT is often used when patterns such as ongoing worry, negative self-talk, avoidance, or emotional reactions feel hard to shift. By identifying and changing these patterns, CBT helps people respond differently to situations, reducing distress and improving day-to-day functioning.

CBT is one of several evidence-based therapies used in counselling, and may be recommended depending on your needs and goals.

What does CBT help with?

CBT can be helpful for:

  • ongoing worry and overthinking

  • low mood

  • unhelpful thinking patterns and negative self-talk

  • avoidance and behavioural patterns that are hard to shift

  • building practical skills to manage difficult thoughts and feelings

CBT is often used alongside other approaches, particularly when working with anxiety, depression, or stress and burnout. For some presentations such as OCD, more targeted approaches may draw on exposure and response prevention

Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT)

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT) is an adaptation of CBT developed for children, adolescents and adults who have experienced trauma. It combines the practical, structured elements of CBT with trauma-sensitive pacing to help people process distressing experiences safely and at their own pace.

TF-CBT is often delivered within broader trauma counselling and alongside trauma-informed approaches, depending on each person's needs.
