Assertiveness Counselling in the Sutherland Shire

For many people, speaking up, setting boundaries, or saying no can feel difficult, even when you know what you want to say. Assertiveness counselling provides a confidential space to understand what's getting in the way and find ways to communicate that feel more like you.

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors work with adolescents, adults and older adults across the Sutherland Shire, in person and via secure online appointments.

What is assertiveness?

Assertiveness involves communicating clearly, respectfully and confidently while staying aligned with your values. Many people find this difficult, particularly when it comes to setting boundaries, saying no, expressing their needs, or navigating conflict in relationships, social situations or the workplace.

These patterns can become more established and may be difficult to shift without understanding what is driving them.

Many people begin looking for information about how to be more assertive, how to stop people-pleasing or how to set healthy boundaries. While practical strategies can be helpful, lasting change often involves understanding the experiences, beliefs and communication patterns that are making it difficult to speak up in the first place.

Signs you may be struggling with assertiveness

If you're finding it difficult to speak up, set boundaries, or express your needs, you might recognise some of the following patterns:

  • Difficulty saying no

  • Avoiding conflict or difficult conversations

  • Over-explaining or over-apologising

  • Fear of rejection or criticism

  • Frustration that builds and later escalates

  • Feeling unheard in relationships

  • Prioritising others at the expense of yourself

These patterns can affect relationships, work, family life and self-confidence.

How can assertiveness counselling help?

Counselling can support you to communicate more clearly, feel more confident, and express your needs without second-guessing yourself.

This involves exploring your communication patterns, understanding what has shaped them, and identifying the beliefs or experiences that may make it difficult to say no, set boundaries or express your needs with confidence. In practice, this often leads to feeling more able to speak openly, respond differently in difficult situations, and approach conversations with greater clarity.

For some people, assertiveness difficulties sit alongside anxiety counselling, particularly where fear of judgement or rejection is part of the picture. They may also overlap with perfectionism counselling, where high expectations and self-criticism can make it harder to speak up or set limits.

Where assertiveness difficulties are showing up most strongly in a specific relationship, this work may also fit alongside couples and relationship counselling or family counselling.
