Therapy for Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder
At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology
Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is a complex eating disorder that extends beyond typical picky eating. It often involves strong avoidance of food due to sensory sensitivities, fear of negative experiences such as choking or vomiting, or a limited interest in eating. Unlike other eating disorders, ARFID is not linked to body image, although it can still result in serious physical, emotional and social difficulties.
ARFID can cause malnutrition, low energy, and delayed growth in children. Those with ARFID may experience anxiety, shame, or distress around food. Socially, eating can become a source of isolation, avoidance, or conflict. Many people with ARFID find that their food restrictions significantly disrupt everyday routines, limit social activity, or lead to a dependence on supplements for nutrition.
At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology, we take a compassionate and individualised approach to treating ARFID.
Our experienced clinicians work with children, adolescents and adults, using evidence-based therapies such as:
-
Mindfulness-based techniques.
When appropriate, we collaborate closely with dietitians, GPs and family members to ensure a coordinated and holistic approach to care.
Therapy focuses on reducing anxiety around food and eating, addressing the underlying psychological factors that contribute to avoidance, while helping to build confidence and flexibility with their relationship with food.
We offer therapy in-person at our Sutherland Shire clinic. To learn more visit our Resources Page or Our Services Page.
