Maudsley Model of Anorexia Nervosa (MANTRA)

at Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology

Maudsley Model of Anorexia Nervosa Treatment (MANTRA) is an evidence-based therapy developed specifically for adults living with Anorexia Nervosa.

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in the Sutherland Shire, our trained clinicians integrate MANTRA into our approach to eating disorder recovery, offering structured, compassionate support tailored to each person. MANTRA recognises that anorexia is shaped and maintained by more than eating behaviours alone. It addresses the unhelpful thinking patterns, emotional responses, and relational difficulties that often underlie the condition.

Adults living with anorexia frequently report experiences of perfectionism, emotional avoidance, difficulty identifying feelings, self-criticism and strained interpersonal relationships. MANTRA helps to reflect on these patterns and understand the role the eating disorder has played and continues to play in their lives. From there, therapy supports the development of motivation and psychological flexibility, laying the groundwork for meaningful and lasting change.

Rather than focusing on immediate behavioural shifts, MANTRA begins with insight-building. Clients are supported to explore how certain patterns may have developed as coping mechanisms and how they continue to influence thoughts, emotions and behaviour. The process then shifts toward strengthening their identity beyond the eating disorder, improving emotional regulation, and creating healthier relationships.  Sessions may include reflection activities, values-based exercises, education and open conversations.

This approach is particularly effective for those who feel ambivalent about recovery or who have not found other treatments helpful. MANTRA provides a respectful and individualised path forward, helping clients move at their own pace and find their own reasons for change. For some, MANTRA may be integrated with other therapies, such as Enhanced Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT-E)Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT-E), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), or trauma-informed approaches, depending on the person's goals and clinical presentation.

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology, we provide a warm, non-judgemental space where recovery is supported with care and clinical insight. Our team understands that readiness to change varies from person to person, and we tailor treatment accordingly. Where appropriate, we collaborate with GPs, dietitians, and psychiatrists to ensure that both the psychological and physical aspects of recovery are addressed through coordinated care.
