Eating Disorder Counselling in the Sutherland Shire
Eating disorders can affect anyone, at any age, and often develop gradually. They may show up as restriction, binge eating, or feeling out of control around food, or in less obvious ways such as ongoing worry about eating, weight or body image. Wherever you are with it, eating disorder counselling can help you make sense of what is happening and support change over time.
Evolving Minds provides eating disorder counselling and therapy from our Menai clinic, serving people across the Sutherland Shire and southern Sydney, with secure online appointments available across Australia. We work with children, adolescents, adults and older adults, and our team includes an ANZAED credentialed eating disorder clinician.
What is an eating disorder?
An eating disorder is a mental health condition involving persistent patterns of eating, or thoughts about food, weight and body image, that affect a person's physical health, emotional wellbeing or daily life. Eating disorders are not only about food. They often reflect how a person is coping with emotions, stress, identity, and a sense of control.
For some people, patterns such as restriction, binge eating or food avoidance develop as a way of managing difficult thoughts or feelings. Over time, these patterns can feel increasingly fixed or hard to change, even when the person wants things to be different.
What causes an eating disorder?
Eating disorders rarely have a single cause. They usually develop from a combination of biological, psychological and environmental factors over time.
There is strong evidence that eating disorders have a biological and genetic basis. They are influenced by systems in the body related to appetite, mood, reward and metabolism, rather than any one factor alone.
Some people may also have personality traits such as perfectionism, high self-criticism, or sensitivity to stress. Others may experience low self-esteem or ongoing dissatisfaction with their body.
Societal pressures can play a role too. Messages around body shape, weight and appearance can contribute to body dissatisfaction and increase vulnerability to disordered eating behaviours.
Dieting is another significant risk factor. Restrictive or extreme eating patterns can increase the likelihood of developing an eating disorder, particularly during adolescence when identity and body image are still developing.
Eating disorders can also develop alongside anxiety or trauma, and may be linked to how a person manages emotions or responds to stress.
What are the signs of an eating disorder?
The signs of an eating disorder include changes in eating patterns, preoccupation with food, weight or body image, and distress around eating. They are not always obvious, and can develop slowly over time.
Some people may:
-
Restrict food or avoid certain foods
-
Experience binge eating or feel out of control around food
-
Engage in strict or rigid eating patterns
-
Feel intense distress about body image
-
Become preoccupied with weight, shape or food
For others, the signs may be less obvious, including ongoing worry about food, changes in eating patterns, or increasing distress related to body image.
Where concerns around appearance is part of the picture, our psychologists and counsellors also provide body dysmorphia treatment in the Sutherland Shire.
Eating Disorders We Work With:
Our clinicians provide therapy for a range of presentations, including:
When should you see someone about an eating disorder?
It is worth seeking support if thoughts about food, weight or body image feel overwhelming, or if eating patterns are becoming hard to manage. You do not need to be at any particular weight, or to have a formal diagnosis, to benefit from counselling.
Many people describe a sense that something is not quite right, even when it is hard to explain or put into words. That feeling is reason enough to reach out.
What does eating disorder therapy involve?
Our clinicians work with eating disorders using evidence-based psychological therapy. The right approach depends on the type of eating disorder, the person's age, and their specific needs.
We focus on understanding each person's experience and working at a pace that suits you. Our clinicians draw on a range of evidence-based eating disorder therapy approaches, including CBT-E, family-based therapy (FBT), MANTRA and RO-DBT, alongside attachment-informed and trauma-informed approaches.
Where appropriate, we work alongside a GP, dietitian or psychiatrist to support consistency across all aspects of care.
