Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP Therapy)

Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology | Menai and Sutherland Shire

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors provide Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapy for children, adolescents and adults across the Sutherland Shire and southern Sydney.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) helps people gradually face the thoughts, situations, images, objects, or sensations that trigger anxiety while reducing compulsions, rituals, avoidance, or reassurance-seeking. Over time, this can help reduce fear and change the cycle that keeps anxiety going.

How ERP Therapy Works

ERP is based on the understanding that avoidance and compulsive behaviours may bring short-term relief, but often reinforce anxiety over time. In therapy, people are gradually and safely exposed to situations that trigger distress while learning new ways to respond.

This process is planned carefully and completed at a pace that feels manageable. ERP is collaborative, structured, and guided by clear therapeutic goals. It does not involve forcing people into distressing situations without preparation or consent.

What ERP Therapy Can Help With

ERP is most commonly used in the treatment of OCD, particularly when intrusive thoughts, compulsions, rituals, checking, reassurance-seeking, or avoidance are present. It may also be helpful for some people experiencing social anxiety, panic, phobias, or other anxiety presentations where avoidance is maintaining distress. Your clinician will determine whether ERP is appropriate based on your needs, goals, and presentation.

What Happens in ERP Therapy

ERP therapy usually begins with assessment, goal setting, and understanding the situations, thoughts, or triggers that maintain anxiety.

Therapy may include:

  • identifying obsessions, fears, rituals, or avoidance patterns

  • understanding how anxiety is maintained over time

  • developing a gradual exposure plan

  • learning how to reduce compulsions, rituals, or reassurance-seeking

  • building confidence responding differently to anxiety

  • practising strategies between sessions where appropriate

Sessions are structured and collaborative, with therapy guided by each person’s goals, pace, and readiness.
