Perinatal Counselling
in Menai and the Sutherland Shire

Pregnancy and the time following birth can be both exciting and overwhelming. Alongside the changes that come with a new baby, some people notice changes in how they feel, how they relate to others, and their sense of self.

Perinatal counselling focuses on helping you make sense of what you are experiencing during pregnancy or after birth, and supporting you through these changes.

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors provide perinatal counselling for people across the Sutherland Shire, surrounding suburbs, and via secure online appointments across Australia.

What is perinatal mental health

Perinatal mental health refers to emotional and psychological experiences during pregnancy and the period following birth.

This can include anxiety, low mood, irritability, intrusive thoughts, feeling overwhelmed, or a sense of disconnection from yourself or your baby. For some, these experiences are new. For others, they may connect with earlier experiences such as trauma or loss.

Perinatal mental health can also be shaped by fertility challenges, pregnancy loss, or a difficult or distressing birth. Changes in the body during and after pregnancy can also influence how people feel about themselves, including shifts in body image or eating patterns, which may connect with eating disorder counselling.

Adjusting to a new baby, changes in roles and responsibilities, and shifts within the family can all play a part in how this time is experienced.

What perinatal counselling may involve

You may consider counselling if things are feeling harder than expected, or if you are finding it difficult to understand or respond to what is happening. This might include ongoing anxiety, low mood, feeling disconnected, difficulty adjusting to parenting, or changes in your relationship.

Counselling provides a space to slow things down and talk through your experiences in a way that feels considered and without judgement. It focuses on helping you make sense of what is happening and consider ways of responding that feel manageable.

Many people use this space to reflect on their experiences, understand patterns in how they are feeling, and explore what may be helpful.

Where relevant, counselling may also sit alongside relationship counselling, particularly where changes in connection or communication are part of the experience.
