Interpersonal Therapy

Psychological Therapy in Menai and the Sutherland Shire

Interpersonal Therapy (IPT), also known as Interpersonal Psychotherapy, is an evidence-based psychological therapy that focuses on the connection between relationships, life events, and emotional experiences. At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, Sutherland Shire, IPT may be used by psychologists and counsellors to support people navigating relationship stress, life transitions, and changes in mood.

Originally developed as a treatment for depression, IPT is now used to support a range of mental health presentations. The approach recognises that changes in mood and emotional functioning often occur within the context of relationships, communication patterns, and significant life transitions.

By exploring these areas, Interpersonal Therapy helps people understand how their relationships and social environment may be influencing their emotional experiences, while developing practical strategies to improve communication, connection, and support.

How Interpersonal Therapy Works

Interpersonal Therapy focuses primarily on current relationships and life circumstances. Past experiences may be explored where helpful to understand interpersonal patterns, although the main focus of therapy is on how these patterns influence present-day relationships and emotional experiences.

Therapy is collaborative and practical. A psychologist or therapist works with you to identify relationship patterns, explore communication styles, and develop strategies that support healthier interactions and stronger connections with others.

During IPT, a psychologist or therapist may work with you to:

  • Understand how relationships affect mood and emotional responses

  • Identify patterns in communication or interpersonal interactions

  • Develop skills to manage conflict and express needs more clearly

  • Strengthen supportive relationships and social connections

  • Navigate significant life changes or transitions

Interpersonal Therapy Can Help With

  • Depression and persistent low mood

  • Anxiety linked to relationship stress

  • Grief and bereavement

  • Difficult relationship patterns

  • Life transitions such as separation, parenthood, or career change

  • Social isolation or difficulty maintaining relationships

IPT can also be adapted for adolescents, adults, and older adults, making it a flexible therapy option across different stages of life.
