Narrative Therapy in the Sutherland Shire

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors provide Narrative Therapy for children, adolescents and adults across the Sutherland Shire. Appointments are available in person at our Menai practice and via secure online appointments across Australia.

Narrative Therapy is a respectful and collaborative approach that helps people understand how the stories they tell about themselves shape their thoughts, emotions and relationships. It is based on the idea that identity is influenced by relationships, life experiences, culture and environment.

What is Narrative Therapy?

Narrative Therapy explores how past experiences influence the stories people tell about themselves, and helps reshape these stories in ways that reflect their values, strengths and future goals.

A central idea in Narrative Therapy is that the person is not the problem. This means therapy works to separate people from the difficulties they are facing, rather than treating those difficulties as defining who they are. Through this process, people often regain a sense of choice and reconnect with parts of themselves that have been overlooked or overshadowed.

Therapy is collaborative and respectful, with the person as the expert on their own life. Sessions focus on listening to your story, identifying the patterns and influences shaping it, and exploring how it can be retold in ways that feel more aligned with who you are.
