Counselling for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology | Menai and Sutherland Shire

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in the Sutherland Shire, our psychologists and counsellors provide evidence-based counselling for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in a safe, respectful and supportive environment. We support children, adolescents and adults and older adults, at our Menai psychology clinic, assisting clients from Bangor, Illawong, Engadine and surrounding suburbs, as well as providing online counselling for clients across Sydney and throughout Australia.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a chronic and often misunderstood mental health condition, affecting approximately 2–3% of the population. It involves unwanted, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviours or mental rituals (compulsions) carried out to reduce distress or prevent feared outcomes. Over time, these patterns can become exhausting, reinforcing anxiety and significantly disrupting daily functioning, relationships, and emotional health.

OCD often coexists with other challenges such as anxiety, depression, perfectionism, trauma symptoms, or ADHD. Addressing these overlapping experiences within counselling helps clients build insight, manage emotional triggers and strengthen coping strategies.

Obsessions may involve fears of contamination, intrusive or taboo thoughts, or a strong need for symmetry and order. In response, people may feel driven to perform rituals such as excessive cleaning, checking, counting, or repeating actions. While these behaviours may offer temporary relief, they often intensify the cycle of anxiety.

Our psychologists and counsellors draw on a range of evidence-based therapies to support clients experiencing OCD, including:

Our clinicians integrate these approaches with trauma-informed and neuro-affirming principles, ensuring each session meets the client’s needs and goals. Therapy supports emotional awareness, builds flexibility in responding to intrusive thoughts, and encourages long-term self-compassion and resilience.

Therapy is personalised, focusing on understanding triggers, reducing compulsive behaviours and building practical skills. Sessions progress at a pace that feels safe and collaborative, helping clients restore balance and confidence in daily routines.

Over time, counselling can help clients develop insight into the patterns that drive obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours, improving confidence in managing anxiety and restoring balance to daily life.
