Animal Assisted Therapy
Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology
Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) is an evidence-based therapeutic approach that involves the intentional inclusion of a trained therapy dog in psychological treatment. At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology, AAT is provided by Charmaine, a qualified mental health clinician who has completed formal training and accreditation in Animal Assisted Therapy.
AAT goes beyond simply having an animal in the room. It is a structured intervention that integrates the therapy dog as a co-regulating partner in the therapeutic process. Research has shown the presence of a therapy dog can reduce physiological signs of stress, increase feelings of safety and trust, and support emotional regulation, particularly in clients who may find traditional talk therapy challenging.
Charmaine works alongside Sebastian, forming a compassionate and responsive therapeutic team. With his calm and intuitive presence, Sebastian helps clients feel more at ease, supports emotional regulation, and encourages deeper engagement in the therapy process. His involvement is always guided by each client’s individual treatment goals.
Animal Assisted Therapy may be particularly helpful for clients navigating:
-
Anxiety and emotional overwhelm
-
Depression, low motivation, or emotional disengagement
Many clients report feeling more grounded, emotionally supported, and at ease during sessions when Sebastian is present. For adolescents, individuals with a history of trauma, or those who identify as neurodivergent, the presence of a therapy dog can create a sense of safety, allowing therapeutic work to unfold more comfortably and effectively.
It’s important to understand Animal Assisted Therapy isn’t a complementary or alternative approach. When used by a trained clinician, it becomes a meaningful and integrated part of evidence-based mental health care.
AAT is currently offered in-person at our Sutherland Shire practice through Charmaine only.
