Animal Assisted Therapy

Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology | Menai and Sutherland Shire

Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) is an evidence-based therapeutic approach that intentionally includes a trained therapy dog as part of psychological support. At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors provide Animal Assisted Therapy in the Sutherland Shire to help clients of all ages feel safe, connected and supported.

Charmaine, a registered mental health clinician with formal training and professional accreditation in Animal Assisted Therapy, works alongside Sebastian, a certified therapy dog with a calm and intuitive presence. Together, they create a structured, goal-oriented environment that supports engagement, co-regulation, and a sense of emotional safety within the therapeutic process.

Charmaine’s approach to Animal Assisted Therapy in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire is trauma informed, neuro-affirming, and guided by current evidence-based practice. AAT may be integrated with other approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), or Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), depending on the client’s goals and needs.

Research shows that Animal Assisted Therapy can reduce physiological signs of stress, enhance emotional regulation, and strengthen trust and connection between client and therapist. These benefits can be especially helpful for individuals who find traditional talk therapy difficult to engage with.

AAT can be especially helpful for individuals seeking trauma counselling in the Sutherland Shire, as well as those experiencing anxiety, depression, emotional dysregulation, or low motivation. It may also benefit adolescents and neurodivergent clients, including people with autism or ADHD, by creating a sense of safety and emotional connection.

Older adults may also benefit from Animal Assisted Therapy. The presence of a therapy dog can reduce loneliness, ease anxiety, and encourage social interaction. For people living with dementia or memory loss, engaging with a therapy animal can stimulate memories, promote relaxation and provide moments of comfort and joy.

Animal Assisted Therapy is a recognised and meaningful psychological approach when delivered by a trained clinician. AAT sessions are available in person at our Menai practice, supporting clients across the Sutherland Shire and greater Sydney region.
