Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
in Menai and the Sutherland Shire

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors provide Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in Menai and across the Sutherland Shire for children, adolescents and adults. Appointments are available in person at our Menai practice and via secure online appointments across Australia.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is an evidence-based psychological approach that focuses on changing how people relate to their thoughts and emotions, rather than trying to eliminate them.

ACT is often used when people feel stuck in their thoughts or overwhelmed by their emotions. This may include overthinking, self-criticism, anxiety, or trying to avoid or control difficult feelings.

What to expect in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

ACT focuses on helping people respond differently to difficult internal experiences.

This may include:

  • developing awareness of thoughts and emotional patterns

  • reducing struggle with difficult internal experiences

  • strengthening emotional regulation

  • building psychological flexibility

  • identifying personal values

  • taking practical steps toward meaningful change

The aim is to create more space around thoughts and feelings so they have less impact on day-to-day life.

When Acceptance and Commitment Therapy may be helpful

ACT may be helpful when you are experiencing:

  • anxiety, chronic worry, or overthinking

  • stress or emotional overwhelm

  • low mood or self-criticism

  • trauma-related distress

  • difficulties with identity or self-esteem

  • ADHD-related emotional regulation challenges

How Acceptance and Commitment Therapy works

ACT is based on the understanding that efforts to control or avoid difficult thoughts and emotions can sometimes make them more persistent.  Instead, therapy focuses on noticing these experiences without becoming caught up in them, supporting more flexible and intentional responses.

Over time, this can reduce the impact of difficult thoughts and feelings and support more consistent engagement in everyday life.

ACT is one of several evidence based therapies used in counselling and may be recommended depending on your needs and goals. You can learn more about our evidence based therapies here.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in the Sutherland Shire

Our psychologists and counsellors provide ACT in Menai and across the Sutherland Shire, including Miranda, Caringbah, Engadine and surrounding suburbs.

ACT may be used as part of broader therapy, particularly alongside cognitive behavioural therapy, eating disorder counselling, or relationship counselling, depending on each person’s presentation.
