Somatic Psychotherapy in the Sutherland Shire

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our clinicians draw on Somatic Psychotherapy to support adults across the Sutherland Shire. Appointments are available in person at our Menai practice.

Somatic Psychotherapy is an evidence-based, body-oriented approach that recognises the connection between mind and body in shaping our emotional experiences and responses. It supports people to safely reconnect with their bodies, particularly where emotional experiences have left a lasting imprint.

Emotional experiences, particularly those related to trauma or chronic stress, are not only held in our memories but also in our nervous system. The body can carry the imprint of unresolved stress, grief or fear, showing up as muscle tension, fatigue, dissociation, anxiety or emotional overwhelm. Rather than focusing only on cognitive insight, Somatic Psychotherapy works directly with the body to support change.

What is Somatic Psychotherapy?

Somatic Psychotherapy supports people to build awareness of their physical experience and the signals the body sends. Through practices such as breathwork, grounding, gentle movement and noticing bodily sensations, therapy helps release tension, regulate emotional states, and restore a sense of safety, agency and connection.

This process can also help people understand how past experiences continue to influence present-day reactions and relationships. By combining body-based awareness with therapeutic conversation, people can develop more adaptive responses and strengthen their capacity to manage emotional challenges.
