Counselling for Social Anxiety
Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology | Menai and Sutherland Shire
Social anxiety can make everyday situations, such as talking with others, going to school or work, or participating in social or group activities, feel overwhelming. Many people describe worrying about being judged, criticised or embarrassed, which can lead to avoidance, distress and reduced confidence. Over time, social anxiety can affect friendships, academic or work performance and a person’s sense of connection and independence.
Social anxiety can appear in different ways. Some people experience persistent worry about saying the wrong thing or making mistakes. Others find it difficult to speak in front of others, start conversations or participate in group settings. Physical symptoms are common and may include blushing, sweating, shaking, nausea, difficulty breathing or a racing heart. These experiences can feel intense and often lead to withdrawal, isolation or unhelpful patterns such as avoidance or safety behaviours.
Social anxiety is also common among neurodivergent children, adolescents, adults and older adults, particularly those with ADHD or autism who may experience sensory overload, communication differences or long-standing fears about social expectations. These experiences can make social situations feel unpredictable, draining or difficult to navigate.
At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors work with children, adolescents and adults experiencing social anxiety. We provide a calm, respectful and trauma-informed space to explore what feels difficult, understand the patterns that maintain social fears and develop strategies that help build confidence. We work with individuals across the Sutherland Shire, including Bangor, Illawong, Alfords Point, Barden Ridge, Engadine, Woronora Heights, Sylvania, Kirrawee, Gymea, Miranda and Caringbah, as well as online across Sydney.
Our clinicians draw on evidence-based therapies for social anxiety, including:
• Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
• Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
• Mindfulness-Based Therapy
• Emotion Focused Therapy
• Internal Family Systems (IFS)
• Schema Therapy
• Play and Art Therapy for younger clients
• RO-DBT-informed strategies where appropriate
Counselling is guided by each person’s goals. Sessions explore the thoughts, emotions and physical sensations linked to social anxiety and introduce practical strategies that help individuals feel more comfortable, confident and prepared in social situations.
