Therapy for Developmental Trauma
in Menai and the Sutherland Shire
Developmental trauma refers to the impact of chronic stress, neglect, abuse or disruptions in caregiving during early development. These experiences can affect how children experience safety, relationships and emotional regulation over time.
Developmental trauma is often referred to as complex trauma, particularly when experiences occur repeatedly over time.
At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors provide trauma-informed, evidence-based therapy for children and adolescents affected by developmental trauma across the Sutherland Shire and southern Sydney. Sessions are available in person at our Menai practice and via secure online appointments where appropriate.
Understanding developmental trauma
Early experiences play an important role in shaping brain development. When children experience ongoing stress without consistent support or protection, the nervous system can remain in a heightened state of alert.Over time, this can affect emotional regulation, behaviour, learning and relationships. Many children adapt in ways that help them cope with overwhelming or unsafe environments, even when these patterns later become difficult to manage.
Behaviours that may appear challenging often reflect adaptive responses to earlier experiences rather than deliberate actions. Developmental trauma may also occur alongside experiences such as anxiety, ADHD or autism, which can influence how children communicate needs and regulate emotions.
Family stress, changes in caregiving, and disruptions in attachment relationships can further shape how trauma is experienced over time.
Common experiences of developmental trauma
Developmental trauma can show up in different ways depending on the child, their environment and stage of development. These patterns often reflect how a child has learned to adapt to stress or uncertainty over time.
You may notice:
-
Strong emotional reactions or difficulty calming after distress
-
Heightened vigilance or sensitivity to perceived threat
-
Withdrawal, shutdown or disconnection
-
Difficulty trusting adults or forming secure relationships
-
Challenges with attention, learning or following instructions
-
Impulsive behaviour or difficulty managing boundaries
-
Sleep difficulties or ongoing physical complaints
These experiences can vary over time and may become more noticeable during periods of change, stress or transition.
When to consider therapy
You may wish to consider therapy if your child is:
-
Struggling with emotional regulation or distress
-
Finding relationships difficult or unpredictable
-
Showing ongoing anxiety, withdrawal or behavioural changes
-
Having difficulty feeling safe or settled
-
Experiencing challenges at school or home following earlier stress
Developmental trauma therapy in Menai and the Sutherland Shire
Our psychologists and counsellors have experience in trauma-informed approaches, including postgraduate training in developmental trauma.
Therapy focuses on creating a safe and predictable environment to support emotional regulation, trust and connection over time. Sessions are paced carefully, with an emphasis on building trust before moving into deeper work.
We work collaboratively with parents, carers and support networks to strengthen co-regulation, emotional understanding and secure relationships across home, school and community settings. For families supporting children affected by early trauma, approaches such as reparative parenting may be incorporated to support attachment and emotional safety within the caregiver relationship.
Approaches may include Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), attachment-focused and trauma-informed therapy, play-based and creative therapies, as well as body-based and sensory regulation strategies.
