Adult Autism (ASD) Assessments

at Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology

Adult Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a complex neurodevelopmental condition impacting social interaction, communication and behaviour. While commonly associated with childhood, Autism evolves rather than fades with age.

In Australia, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is often under-recognised in adults, with nearly half of all diagnoses occurring later in life. Many spend years navigating social, emotional, or sensory challenges without realising these experiences may be related to Autism. A late diagnosis can bring clarity, offering a new perspective on past experiences and a greater sense of understanding.

Autism can look different in adults than in children. Many people learn to cope in ways that make them seem confident on the outside, even if they feel overwhelmed or misunderstood on the inside.

Some patterns may have been part of daily life for a long time without a clear reason. These can include:

  • Feeling unsure in social situations or finding it hard to ‘read the room’.

  • Struggling to put thoughts into words or feeling confused by sarcasm or indirect language.

  • Preferring routines and feeling unsettled or anxious when plans suddenly change.

  • Noticing a strong sensitivity to sounds, lights, textures, or crowded spaces

  • Becoming deeply focused on specific interests or activities.

  • Finding it difficult to manage emotions or adjust to new situations.

These experiences may be consistent with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD); however, without a formal assessment, it can be difficult to gain clarity. An assessment can help make sense of these patterns and offer a clearer path forward.

In addition to assessments, we offer ongoing therapy and support for children, adolescents, and adults who preset with Autism.

Whether you’re exploring Autism for yourself or seeking support for your child, our team is here to provide compassionate, neurodiversity-affirming care tailored to your needs.

 The Assessment Process

01

Getting Started

While it can be helpful to speak with your GP, a referral is not required to begin an adult autism assessment.

If you are under 25 years of age, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate with a valid GP referral.

03

Intake Assessment

Your first appointment will focus on exploring your strengths, challenges, developmental history and reasons for seeking an autism assessment. You will also be asked to complete some pre-assessment questionnaires to help determine whether a full assessment is appropriate.

05

Clinical Interview

This part of the assessment involves two separate appointments, each lasting approximately 1.5 hours.

Your clinician will use neuro-affirming, standardised tools alongside a diagnostic interview. These sessions are structured yet conversational and are designed to explore your experiences in a way that is respectful, collaborative, and supportive.

02

Contact Us

To begin, call our client relationship team on 02 8519 4197 or contact us through our online enquiry form. We’ll talk you through the assessment process, outline the expected costs, and answer any questions you may have.

04

Questionnaires

You will be asked to complete psychometric questionnaires designed to assess social, communication, sensory processing, routines, and emotional regulation.

Where appropriate, input from someone who knew you in childhood may also be requested to support a thorough and accurate diagnosis.

06

Feedback and Report

Your clinician will carefully review all the assessment information and prepare your written report, including recommendations and details for your feedback session.

A feedback session will be booked where your clinician will go through the results and provide you with the final report.
