Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)
at Evolving Minds Counselling

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a structured, evidence based therapy most commonly used in the treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). It is also effective in supporting a range of anxiety related conditions, including phobias, social anxiety, panic disorder and generalised anxiety disorder (GAD).

ERP is based on the principle that avoidance and compulsions, while offering short-term relief, can reinforce anxiety in the long term. In therapy, clients are gradually and safely exposed to anxiety triggers, such as intrusive thoughts, situations, or objects, while resisting the urge to engage in rituals or avoidance behaviours.

With the support of a trained clinician, this process is introduced at a pace that feels manageable. Over time, repeated exposure helps reduce the emotional intensity of these triggers, teaching the brain that the feared outcome is either unlikely or tolerable. This can significantly reduce anxiety, break the cycle of obsessions and compulsions, and support greater confidence and flexibility in daily life.

ERP is particularly effective for:
