Play and Art Therapy
Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology | Menai and Sutherland Shire
Play and Art Therapy are evidence-based approaches that help children and adolescents express emotions, build emotional regulation skills and work through experiences in ways that feel natural, safe and developmentally appropriate. Through play, drawing, painting, sensory activities, storytelling and symbolic expression, young people can explore feelings that may be difficult to communicate through words alone. These approaches are especially helpful for children experiencing anxiety, trauma, grief, ADHD, autism, school pressure, friendship difficulties or big emotions that feel overwhelming.
Parents often notice when their child is feeling unsettled or is finding it hard to express themselves. Play and Art Therapy offer a gentle pathway for children to explore their inner world, while also helping parents understand what their child may be experiencing. Families often find this especially useful when traditional talk therapy feels difficult or inaccessible for their child.
At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, we provide Play and Art Therapy in a warm, inclusive and child-centred environment. Our clinicians support children and adolescents from across the Sutherland Shire, including Menai, Bangor, Illawong, Alfords Point, Barden Ridge, Engadine, Woronora Heights, Sylvania, Kirrawee, Gymea, Miranda and Caringbah. Sessions are trauma-informed, neuro-affirming and tailored to each child’s individual needs.
Play and Art Therapy are particularly helpful for children and adolescents experiencing:
• Anxiety, stress or emotional overwhelm
• Low mood or challenges with emotional expression
• Trauma or post-traumatic stress
• Grief, separation or significant change
• School-related challenges or adjustment difficulties
• ADHD or executive functioning challenges
• Autism and other neurodivergent experiences
• Identity exploration, including LGBTQIA+ support
• Fears, phobias or worries that are hard to verbalise
Children do not need any artistic skills or confidence to participate. Play and Art Therapy are not about producing “good” art or structured outcomes; the focus is on emotional safety, expression and supporting young people to make sense of their thoughts and feelings. Sessions may include play-based activities, art-making, sensory tools and gentle reflection depending on each child’s goals and comfort level. Parents are involved where appropriate, ensuring they feel supported throughout their child’s therapeutic journey.
