Family Based Therapy (FBT)
at Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology
Maudsley Family-Based Therapy (FBT) is a leading, evidence-based treatment for children and adolescents living with eating disorders. It is most commonly used to treat Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and other restrictive or compensatory eating behaviours.
This approach empowers parents and carers to take an active, supportive role in their child’s recovery. Rather than placing the burden of change solely on the young person, FBT brings the family together to disrupt disordered eating patterns, restore nutrition, and rebuild trust and connection.
FBT has three phases:
-
Restoring weight and physical health with parental support
-
Gradually returning control of eating back to the child or young person
-
Addressing developmental and family dynamics that support long-term recovery
At Evolving Minds Counselling, we recognise the emotional toll eating disorders can take on the entire family. Our FBT-trained clinicians provide compassionate, practical guidance to help families work toward recovery.
