Adult Assessments
in Menai and the Sutherland Shire

Many adults seek an ADHD or autism assessment later in life after years of feeling that things have taken more effort than they seem to for others. For some, this includes long-standing difficulties with attention, organisation, sensory sensitivity, emotional regulation or social interaction. For others, it reflects a growing awareness that masking and compensating have come at a personal cost.

An assessment can provide clarity, context and an evidence-based understanding of how your brain works.

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, we provide adult ADHD and autism assessments for individuals across the Sutherland Shire, with appointments available in person and via telehealth across Australia.

Understanding adult ADHD and autism

ADHD and autism can present differently in adulthood compared to childhood. Many adults develop strategies to manage or mask their experiences, which can make patterns less visible or more difficult to identify.

For some people, this can include:

  • Difficulties with attention, organisation or time management

  • Sensory sensitivity or overwhelm

  • Emotional regulation differences

  • Social communication differences

  • Fatigue associated with masking or sustained effort

Assessment considers these experiences within the context of your life, rather than relying on a single measure or checklist.

The assessment process

Adult ADHD and Adult Autism Assessments are comprehensive and completed over three separate appointments.

The process typically includes:

  • A detailed clinical interview

  • Standardised, evidence-based questionnaires

  • Exploration of developmental history

  • Review of current presentation and functional impact across work, study and relationships

Where appropriate, relevant past reports or additional background information may also be considered.

The assessment process also takes into account factors such as masking, learned coping strategies, trauma and co-occurring mental health experiences, which can influence how ADHD or autism presents in adulthood.

Who these assessments are suited to

Assessments are appropriate for adults seeking clarity regarding ADHD, autism, or both.

Many people pursue assessment after:

  • Years of uncertainty or misattribution

  • Recognising similar patterns in others

  • Learning more about neurodiversity

  • Noticing ongoing difficulties despite previous explanations

Assessments are conducted in a neuro-affirming and respectful way, with careful attention to individual context rather than relying on stereotypes or narrow diagnostic assumptions.

Referrals, funding and next steps

Adult ADHD and autism assessments are offered as private services and are not covered under Medicare.

Our psychologists have extensive training and experience in the assessment of ADHD and autism in adults, working within recognised diagnostic and ethical frameworks.

If you are unsure whether an assessment is appropriate, our Client Care Team can discuss the process and next steps with you.

Following completion of the assessment, a comprehensive written report is prepared outlining findings, diagnostic conclusions and practical recommendations. Reports may be used to inform workplace accommodations, further therapy, or personal understanding.

The report is provided during a feedback session, which is included as part of the assessment process.
