Anxiety Counselling in the Sutherland Shire

Anxiety can show up differently from person to person. For some, it is a constant undercurrent of worry that makes it hard to switch off or feel settled. For others, it arrives suddenly, a racing heart, shortness of breath, or a sense that something is about to go wrong, even when there is no clear reason why.

Many people living with anxiety have been managing it for a long time before they consider counselling. Sometimes it builds so gradually that it becomes hard to recognise how much it is affecting everyday life, including sleep, relationships, work and confidence.

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors work with children, adolescents and adults across the Sutherland Shire who are experiencing anxiety in its many different forms. If you are looking for an anxiety therapist in the Sutherland Shire, our Menai practice offers appointments in person and online.

How does anxiety show up?

Anxiety is one of the most common reasons people seek counselling. It can affect thinking, physical sensations, and day-to-day functioning in ways that may feel difficult to explain to others.

People experiencing anxiety often describe:

  • Persistent worry or overthinking that is hard to control

  • Racing thoughts, especially at night

  • Panic attacks or sudden intense feelings of fear

  • Physical symptoms such as a racing heart, chest tightness, nausea or dizziness

  • Difficulty sleeping or relaxing

  • Avoiding situations, places or conversations because of the anxiety they create

  • Feeling on edge, irritable or easily overwhelmed

  • Struggling to make decisions or second-guessing yourself often

These experiences can vary in intensity and change over time. Anxiety can also affect confidence and self-esteem, particularly when avoidance becomes a pattern, and the situations you feel able to manage begin to narrow.

Types of anxiety we work with

Our psychologists and counsellors in Menai work with a wide range of anxiety presentations, including generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety, panic disorder, health anxiety, performance and exam anxiety, and anxiety related to life transitions or adjustment.

Anxiety in children and adolescents can look different, often presenting as school refusal, separation anxiety, physical complaints, or difficulty managing change.

Anxiety can also appear later in life. We work with older adults experiencing anxiety in retirement, after bereavement, or alongside health changes. For women, anxiety may also arise during the perinatal period or through menopause and perimenopause.

Anxiety also occurs alongside depression, OCD, ADHD and trauma.

How does anxiety counselling help?

Anxiety counselling focuses on understanding how anxiety is showing up for you, what may be maintaining it, and how to respond to it differently.

Sessions typically involve:

  • Exploring patterns of thinking that fuel worry or avoidance

  • Learning to recognise the physical signs of anxiety and respond differently

  • Developing practical strategies to manage worry and overwhelm

  • Gradually building confidence in situations that currently feel difficult

  • Reducing avoidance in a way that feels safe and sustainable

  • Building skills to manage anxiety over the long term, not just in the short term

Our clinicians draw on a range of evidence-based therapies, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Interpersonal Therapy, adapting the approach to each person's needs, stage of life, and goals.  We also provide play and art therapy for children and adolescents.

When to Consider Anxiety Counselling

You may find it helpful to speak with someone if anxiety is:

  • Ongoing or increasing over time

  • Interfering with work, school or relationships

  • Leading to avoidance that is restricting your life

  • Affecting your sleep or physical health

  • Making it difficult to enjoy things that used to feel manageable

  • Feeling hard to shift on your own, even when you understand it

Many people seek support when anxiety begins to feel persistent, or difficult to manage.

You do not need to be at crisis point to seek counselling. Many people find that getting support early makes a significant difference.
