Understanding ARFID

Psychological Therapy in Menai and the Sutherland Shire

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors provide evidence-based, neuro-affirming therapy for Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) for children, adolescents and adults across the Sutherland Shire. Sessions are available in person at our Menai practice and via secure online appointments across Australia.

Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is a complex eating disorder that extends beyond typical picky eating. It may involve strong avoidance of food due to sensory sensitivities, fear of choking or vomiting, limited interest in eating, or distress linked to past experiences with food.

Unlike other eating disorders, ARFID is not driven by body image concerns, yet it can still lead to significant physical, emotional and social challenges.

ARFID May Present As:

  • very limited range of accepted foods

  • strong sensory sensitivities to texture, taste or smell

  • fear of choking, vomiting or gastrointestinal discomfort

  • distress around mealtimes

  • dependence on nutritional supplements

  • weight loss or difficulty maintaining growth

  • avoidance of social situations involving food

  • anxiety linked to eating

For some people, ARFID may occur alongside Autism, ADHD, anxiety or trauma related experiences.

Across the Lifespan

In children, ARFID may emerge early and be associated with sensory sensitivities or developmental differences.

In adolescents and adults, ARFID may involve longstanding patterns of restriction, fear-based avoidance or increasing distress in social and occupational settings.

Family involvement can be an important part of therapy, particularly for younger clients.
