Trauma Counselling in Menai and the Sutherland Shire

Trauma can have a lasting impact, particularly when it arises from interpersonal experiences such as neglect, abuse, or violence. An estimated 57% to 75% of Australians will experience a potentially traumatic event in their lifetime, and these experiences can affect how you relate to others and how safe you feel in your body.

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors provide trauma counselling and trauma therapy in Menai and across the Sutherland Shire for children, adolescents and adults. Sessions are available in person at our Menai practice and via secure online appointments across Australia.

Understanding trauma and PTSD

Trauma-informed counselling recognises how past experiences continue to affect both the mind and body. Trauma can present physically as fatigue, muscle tension, headaches, sleep difficulties, or chronic pain, and emotionally as anxiety, low mood, or a sense of feeling on edge.  For some people, these develop into post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or complex trauma, while for others the impact is less defined but still significant.

Many people notice ongoing difficulties with trust, emotional regulation, connection, or a sense of safety. Trauma can also affect identity, making it harder to feel grounded or confident over time, and is often accompanied by anxiety, low mood, or chronic stress.

People often describe feeling on edge, disconnected, or unsure why certain patterns keep repeating. In counselling, this may present as challenges in relationships, managing strong emotions, or making sense of past experiences.

How trauma can show up

Trauma can affect people in different ways. Some people may experience:

  • Flashbacks, intrusive memories, or feeling on edge

  • Difficulties with emotional regulation

  • Disconnection, numbness or disassociation

  • Challenges with trust and relationships

  • Ongoing anxiety, distress, or low mood

  • Patterns that feel difficult to shift

Trauma-informed counselling

Counselling provides a structured and consistent space to explore your experiences, understand their impact, and begin to make sense of your story in a way that feels manageable.  Like a physical injury, trauma often heals best with appropriate support.

This may include:

  • Understanding how trauma is held in the body, including physical symptoms, tension, or dissociation

  • Developing awareness of emotional and behavioural patterns

  • Supporting emotional regulation and stability

  • Working through difficulties with trust and connection

  • Exploring identity and sense of self over time

Where appropriate, evidence-based approaches such as EMDR therapy, Trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and somatic and attachment-informed work may be incorporated to support the processing of traumatic experiences.

Trauma counselling in Menai and the Sutherland Shire

Our psychologists and counsellors provide trauma counselling in Menai and across the Sutherland Shire, including Sutherland, Miranda, Caringbah, Engadine, Gymea, Kirrawee, Illawong, Bangor, and surrounding suburbs.

Our clinicians have experience in trauma-informed approaches, including postgraduate training in developmental trauma, and work with children, adolescents, and adults.

We focus on understanding each person's experience and working at a pace that feels manageable. Over time, trauma counselling can support a greater sense of safety, steadier emotional regulation, and a clearer sense of self. For many people, it also opens the possibility of post-traumatic growth.
