Understanding Reparative Parenting

Psychological Therapy in Menai and the Sutherland Shire

Based in Menai in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire, Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology provides evidence-based, trauma-informed and neuro-affirming reparative parenting therapy for parents and carers seeking to strengthen connection, emotional safety and trust within their family. We offer in-person sessions at our Menai psychology clinic, supporting families from Bangor, Illawong, Engadine and surrounding suburbs, as well as online across Sydney and Australia.

Reparative parenting is often used when children have experienced developmental trauma, attachment disruptions or early relational stress, and focuses on rebuilding emotional safety and trust within the parent–child relationship.

Understanding Reparative Parenting

Reparative parenting is a relationship-based approach designed to help children who have experienced developmental trauma, disrupted attachment or early experiences of stress. These experiences can influence how a child expresses emotions, responds to routine, forms relationships and manages sensory or behavioural overwhelm.

Parents and carers often describe feeling unsure how to help, or concerned about ongoing emotional or behavioural challenges at home.

How Reparative Parenting Therapy Supports Families

Our clinicians work alongside families to rebuild connection through practical, attuned and emotionally safe strategies. Therapy focuses on helping parents and carers understand what may sit beneath a child’s behaviour, including emotional reactivity, shutdown responses, mistrust, anxiety or difficulties with co-regulation.

Parents are supported to respond with confidence, clarity and warmth while strengthening trust and emotional safety within the parent–child relationship.

Reparative parenting therapy may involve:

  • co-regulation strategies

  • attuned communication

  • reflective listening

  • validating emotions

  • predictable routines

  • relational repair following moments of stress or disconnection

Creative, play-based and narrative approaches may also be incorporated to support emotional expression for children who find verbal communication difficult.

Therapeutic Approaches

Our clinicians draw on a range of evidence-based and relational approaches, including:

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT)
Play therapy principles, including Theraplay
Mindfulness-based strategies
Child-centred emotion coaching
Attachment-focused interventions

Co-Existing Presentations

Children may also experience coexisting presentations such as anxiety, separation anxiety, school avoidance, ADHD, autism, perfectionism, or difficulties with emotional regulation.

Children who benefit from reparative parenting strategies may also be supported through our Child Counselling and Adolescent Counselling services, particularly when emotional regulation, trauma or neurodevelopmental differences are present.

Experience Supporting Families

Our team has experience working within child protection, out-of-home care and family restoration settings, supporting families navigating complex developmental and relational challenges.

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology, we recognise the importance of the relationships parents and carers have with their children. Therapy focuses on strengthening connection, building emotional safety and supporting families to navigate challenges together.
