Counselling for Stress and Burnout in the Sutherland Shire

Stress and burnout can build gradually over time. You might feel constantly under pressure, mentally exhausted, or unable to switch off, even when you try to rest.

Burnout can develop when stress becomes constant and there is not enough opportunity to recover. For some people, this shows up as ongoing worry, irritability or difficulty concentrating. For others, it may feel like low energy, disconnection, or a sense of being overwhelmed or depleted.

Over time, this can begin to affect both physical and emotional capacity, making even small tasks feel more difficult.

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors work with children, adolescents and adults across the Sutherland Shire experiencing stress and burnout.

Counselling provides a space to understand what is happening and begin to approach things differently.

Stress and burnout: what’s the difference?

Stress often feels like there is too much to manage at once. You might feel tense, restless, under pressure or unable to switch off.

Burnout is different. It often feels like there is nothing left to give. This can include emotional exhaustion, reduced motivation, difficulty concentrating, and a sense that even small tasks feel overwhelming.

Stress and burnout may be influenced by factors such as work pressure, study demands, caregiving responsibilities, perfectionism, trauma or life transitions.

Both can affect sleep, mood, energy and relationships. When burnout develops, it often requires more than short-term coping strategies, and may involve changing how you respond to ongoing demands.

How stress and burnout can show up

Stress and burnout can affect both your mind and body. You might notice:

  • Feeling overwhelmed or constantly under pressure

  • Difficulty switching off or disrupted sleep

  • Reduced concentration or mental fatigue

  • Irritability or increased emotional reactivity

  • Low energy or lack of motivation

  • Feeling emotionally drained or disconnected

  • Withdrawal from usual activities or responsibilities

These experiences can make it harder to keep up with daily demands over time.

Why it can feel hard to switch off

When stress is ongoing, your nervous system can remain on high alert. Even when the situation changes, your body may continue to respond as though the pressure is still there.

This can show up as racing thoughts, muscle tension, headaches, disrupted sleep, or a constant sense of urgency.

When to consider therapy

You may wish to consider therapy if stress or burnout is:

  • Ongoing or increasing over time

  • Affecting sleep, concentration or energy

  • Impacting work, school or relationships

  • Leading to withdrawal or reduced functioning

  • Difficult to manage on your own
