Understanding Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Psychological Therapy in Menai and the Sutherland Shire

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors provide evidence-based therapy for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) for children, adolescents and adults across the Sutherland Shire and southern Sydney. Our Menai practice supports people from surrounding communities including Bangor, Illawong and Engadine, and we also work with clients seeking OCD therapy across the wider Sydney region through secure online sessions.

Our clinicians provide evidence-based treatment for OCD, including Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), a widely recognised psychological treatment for obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is a chronic and often misunderstood mental health condition affecting approximately 2–3% of the population. It involves unwanted, intrusive thoughts, images or urges (obsessions) and repetitive behaviours or mental rituals (compulsions) that a person feels driven to perform to reduce distress or prevent feared outcomes. Over time, these patterns can become exhausting and may interfere with relationships, work, school and everyday functioning.

OCD often occurs alongside anxiety, low mood, perfectionistic traits, trauma or ADHD, which may interact and intensify distress.

Therapy focuses on changing the way a person responds to intrusive thoughts and urges, reducing compulsive behaviours and gradually building confidence in tolerating uncertainty and anxiety.

Understanding Obsessions and Compulsions

Obsessions often involve persistent thoughts or fears that feel intrusive or difficult to dismiss. These may include fears about contamination, harm, upsetting or unwanted thoughts, or a strong need for things to feel “just right.”

To reduce the distress caused by these thoughts, a person may feel compelled to engage in behaviours such as checking, cleaning, counting, repeating actions or seeking reassurance. While these behaviours can bring temporary relief, they often reinforce the cycle of anxiety over time.

Therapy for OCD in Menai and the Sutherland Shire

At Evolving Minds, therapy focuses on understanding the patterns that maintain obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours while helping individuals develop new ways of responding to distress.

Our psychologists and counsellors draw on a range of evidence-based therapies, including:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

  • Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

  • Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

  • Schema Therapy

  • Mindfulness-based strategies

Our clinicians take a trauma-informed and neuro-affirming approach, adapting therapy to each person’s goals, strengths and pace. Therapy may focus on recognising triggers, developing emotional regulation skills, responding more flexibly to intrusive thoughts and gradually reducing compulsive behaviours.

Many people find that intrusive thoughts become less distressing when they learn new ways of responding to them, rather than trying to eliminate the thoughts themselves.

Sessions progress in a collaborative and supportive way, helping individuals strengthen confidence in managing anxiety and reconnect with daily activities, relationships and routines. You can learn more about our psychology services in the Sutherland Shire on Our Services page.
