Adjustment Disorder and Life Adjustment Counselling
in the Sutherland Shire
Some life changes settle on their own. Others linger, affecting how you sleep, how you feel, how you function at work or at home. When the response to a change feels heavier or lasts longer than you expected, counselling can help.
At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors work with children, adolescents and adults across the Sutherland Shire who are finding a period of change, stress or transition harder to navigate than they thought it would be.
Adjustment disorder vs. life adjustment difficulties
The two terms are often used interchangeably, although there is a meaningful distinction.
Adjustment disorder is a clinical diagnosis used when emotional or behavioural symptoms develop in response to an identifiable stressor and cause distress or impairment beyond what would ordinarily be expected.
Life adjustment difficulties is a broader, non-diagnostic term for the everyday experience of struggling to adapt to change, a new job, a move, becoming a parent, retirement, an injury, or a relationship ending.
Adjustment disorder and depression
Adjustment disorder and depression share several features such as low mood, fatigue, withdrawal and difficulty concentrating. The key distinction is the trigger and trajectory.
Adjustment disorder is linked to a specific, identifiable stressor, and symptoms typically ease as you adapt or the stressor resolves. Depression tends to be more persistent, can occur without a clear trigger, and often involves more pervasive changes in mood, energy and sense of self.
What adjustment difficulties can look like
Common signs include:
-
Persistent low mood
-
Heightened anxiety or worry
-
Sleep disturbance
-
Irritability or mood changes
-
Fatigue
-
Difficulty concentrating
-
Withdrawal from usual activities
-
Feeling overwhelmed or unable to cope
These experiences can overlap with anxiety or depression, particularly during prolonged or compounding change.
Adjustment across the lifespan
Adjustment difficulties can present differently depending on age and context.
In children and adolescents, they may emerge following family changes, school transitions or friendship disruptions. This may be explored further within child and adolescent counselling, where therapy is adapted to developmental needs.
In adults, adjustment difficulties commonly follow relationship breakdown, workplace stress, health concerns, parenting transitions or significant life events. Where the change relates to a workplace injury or motor vehicle accident, support may be available through Workers compensation or CTP counselling.
In older adults, retirement, bereavement, and shifts in health or independence are common contributors. Our team also provides counselling for older adults and seniors navigating these transitions.
How we work
Sessions are tailored to your circumstances and goals. The focus is on understanding your response to the stressor, supporting emotional regulation, and developing practical strategies to manage day-to-day life during a difficult period. Your clinician will draw on evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy or Interpersonal Therapy.
