Bulimia Nervosa Therapy in the Sutherland Shire

When eating begins to feel out of control, it can be confusing and difficult to talk about. Some people notice cycles of overeating followed by a strong need to compensate, while others feel caught in patterns of guilt, shame and attempts to regain control. Therapy can help make sense of these patterns and ease the distress they cause.

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors provide evidence-based bulimia nervosa therapy in Menai and across the Sutherland Shire for adolescents and adults. Sessions are available in person at our Menai practice and via secure online appointments across Australia.

What is bulimia nervosa?

Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder involving cycles of binge eating followed by behaviours aimed at preventing weight gain, such as vomiting, over-exercising or fasting. People often describe a sense of loss of control during eating, followed by distress, guilt or an urgency to compensate.

These cycles are often connected to how a person manages emotions, self-criticism, and attempts to cope with distress or regain a sense of control. Bulimia frequently develops after periods of restriction, and the cycles can become increasingly hard to interrupt. Weight does not always change noticeably, which can make bulimia harder to recognise.

What are the signs of bulimia nervosa?

The signs of bulimia nervosa are not always obvious, partly because weight often stays within a typical range. Common signs include repeated episodes of binge eating, compensatory behaviours such as vomiting, over-exercising or laxative use, and strict or rigid food rules. Many people also become preoccupied with food, weight or body image.

Other signs can be more behavioural, such as avoiding eating with others, frequently going to the bathroom after meals, or experiencing low mood, anxiety or guilt around eating. These patterns often carry significant emotional weight and can be difficult to talk about.

When should you consider therapy?

If eating feels out of control, or if cycles of bingeing and compensating are hard to interrupt, therapy can help. You don't need a formal diagnosis to reach out.

Therapy for bulimia nervosa focuses on understanding the binge–purge cycle, easing distress, and supporting more flexible patterns of eating. Our clinicians draw on a range of evidence-based eating disorder therapy approaches, including CBT-E, dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and interpersonal therapy where relevant. Where appropriate, therapy may also involve collaboration with a GP, dietitian or psychiatrist.

Our team is trained in eating disorders and includes an ANZAED credentialed clinician.
