ADHD or autism? Why assess both together?
ADHD and autism can share characteristics that look similar on the surface. Difficulty concentrating may reflect ADHD, or it may relate to sensory overload or anxiety in a busy environment. Social differences may arise because of impulsivity and missing social cues, or because of differences in social communication. Both conditions can affect executive functioning, emotional regulation and routines, and characteristics of one may influence how the other presents. What does the assessment involve?
The assessment follows a structured, evidence-based diagnostic process and is completed over three appointments, including two assessment sessions and one feedback session, across approximately four to six weeks.
The assessment includes:

clinical interviews exploring your current presentation and daily functioning

comprehensive developmental history

standardised assessment measures for ADHD and autism

assessment of executive functioning, attention, sensory processing, emotional regulation and social communication

exploration of education, employment, relationships and everyday functioning

review of masking, learned coping strategies, trauma and co-occurring mental health conditions
-
review of previous reports where available
-
collateral information from a parent, partner or another person who knows you well, where appropriate
Following the assessment, you will receive:

a comprehensive written report outlining the assessment findings and diagnostic conclusions

individualised recommendations to inform future treatment, workplace or educational adjustments where appropriate, and ongoing support

a feedback appointment where your psychologist explains the findings, answers your questions, and discusses the recommendations

Telehealth ADHD and autism assessments
We provide combined ADHD and autism assessments for adults via secure telehealth across Australia.
Many components of the assessment can be completed online. Where particular assessment measures require in-person observation, your psychologist will discuss this with you before the assessment begins and explain the most appropriate assessment pathway.
How much does a combined ADHD and autism assessment cost?
The fee for a combined adult ADHD and autism assessment is $2,000.
Your assessment fee includes:

Adults under 25 years of age may be eligible for Medicare rebates for part of the assessment when referred under the Medicare Complex Neurodevelopmental Disorder assessment pathway. Eligibility depends on the referral pathway and individual circumstances. Our Client Care Team can discuss this with you when you enquire.
Adults aged 25 years and over are not currently eligible for Medicare rebates for combined ADHD and autism assessments.
Who conducts the assessment?

What happens after the assessment?
Following the assessment, we'll meet with you to discuss the findings, explain the recommendations and answer any questions you may have. Our aim is to help you understand how the assessment findings relate to your everyday experiences and what supports may be helpful moving forward.
Depending on the outcome of the assessment, some adults choose to continue with ADHD therapy, ADHD coaching, autism therapy, or a combination of these services to help implement the recommendations from the assessment and build practical strategies that support everyday life.
Where appropriate, we can also discuss referral pathways if you wish to explore medication for ADHD.
