• Adolescents and Young Adults
Nicole Wallace is a Registered Psychologist at Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in the Sutherland Shire. She works with children, adolescents and adults, with a particular focus on eating disorders, neurodivergence and supporting adolescents and young adults.
Nicole's style is relaxed and down to earth. Coming to therapy can feel daunting, particularly when you are not sure what to expect or where to begin. Her counselling and therapy sessions are collaborative, and she takes the time to understand what has been happening for you, what matters to you and what you would like to be different, so that therapy stays relevant to what is going on in your life.
Nicole works with eating disorders, disordered eating and body image difficulties. This may include restriction, binge eating, difficult or rigid patterns around food, thoughts about weight or body image, or feeling increasingly anxious or overwhelmed around eating. She also works with the anxiety, perfectionism, low self-worth and emotional difficulties that can sit alongside concerns with food and eating.
Nicole also works with autistic and ADHD clients around overwhelm, emotional regulation, executive functioning, sensory needs and relationships. Her approach recognises that neurodivergence affects people differently, and she looks at what may help each person manage the demands they are experiencing at home, school, university, work or in relationships.
Nicole particularly enjoys working with adolescents and young adults. This stage of life can bring changes in relationships, increasing independence and pressures around school, study, work, identity and the future. She also supports young people experiencing anxiety, depression, low mood and stress.
Therapy provides space to talk about what is happening while developing practical ways of managing the things that feel difficult. For parents, it can be hard to know how to help when your child is struggling with anxiety, eating or body image, overwhelm, friendships or the pressures of school and growing independence. Nicole works with young people to understand what is happening for them, while recognising the important role parents and families play in supporting them.
Nicole is often joined at the practice by Ember, her toy cavoodle. For some clients, having a dog in the room makes the first appointment feel less daunting, gives them something to focus on while talking about difficult things, or simply makes the space feel more relaxed. Ember only attends sessions where clients have said they would like her there, and appointments are always available without her.
Her approach draws on evidence based therapies including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills. Nicole also uses psychoeducation and practical strategies so that clients can build a clearer understanding of their thoughts, emotions and responses, and develop skills to use outside therapy.
