Binge Eating Therapy in Sydney and the Sutherland Shire
Binge eating can leave you feeling guilty, ashamed or frustrated with yourself. You may find yourself eating more than you intended and feeling unable to stop, despite promising yourself it will be different next time.
At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology, our psychologists and counsellors provide binge eating disorder therapy for adolescents and adults across Sydney and the Sutherland Shire.
What is binge eating disorder?
Binge eating disorder involves recurring episodes of eating large amounts of food while feeling unable to stop, often followed by guilt, shame or distress. Unlike bulimia nervosa, it does not involve regular behaviours such as vomiting or fasting to compensate for eating.
Binge eating is not simply about willpower. Restriction, stress and difficult emotions can contribute to the cycle. It can also occur alongside anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD and difficulties with body image.
Signs of binge eating disorder
You might notice:
-
Eating much more than usual in a short period of time
-
Feeling unable to stop or control how much you eat
-
Eating when not physically hungry, or until uncomfortably full
-
Eating alone or hiding food because of embarrassment
-
Feeling guilty, ashamed or distressed after eating
-
Cycles of dieting or restriction followed by bingeing
What's the difference between binge eating and disordered eating?
Disordered eating is a broader term for difficulties such as restriction, rigid food rules or alternating between restricting and overeating. These patterns can affect your daily life even when they do not meet the criteria for an eating disorder diagnosis.
Therapy focuses on how eating is affecting your life, including food rules, restriction and times when eating feels difficult to control.
How can therapy help with binge eating disorder?
Therapy explores what is keeping the binge eating cycle going. This may include recognising what happens before the urge to binge, understanding the role of emotions or restriction and changing patterns that have become difficult to break.
Our clinicians draw on evidence-based binge eating disorder therapy approaches, including CBT-E, DBT-E and ACT, alongside attachment-informed and trauma-informed therapy.
Where appropriate, we also work with your GP, dietitian, psychiatrist or other members of your treating team.
Our team includes an ANZAED Credentialed Eating Disorder Clinician. Every clinician who works with eating disorders has completed additional training in this area.
