Family Counselling for Parents and Children
in the Sutherland Shire

When communication becomes difficult, conflict increases, or relationships within the family begin to feel strained, it can be hard to know how to move forward. Many families find themselves repeating the same patterns or feeling unsure how to respond to what is happening at home.  Family counselling can help make sense of these patterns and support more effective ways of communicating over time.

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors provide family counselling for parents, children and adolescents across the Sutherland Shire and southern Sydney. Sessions are available in person at our Menai practice and via secure online appointments.

Understanding family dynamics

Families move through many stages, from early parenting and the arrival of a new baby to adolescence, blended households separation, and later life changes involving ageing parents or shifting roles within the family.

These transitions can place pressure on relationships, disrupt communication and affect how family members relate to one another over time. This can include navigating increasing independence in adolescence, changes in family structure, or supporting older family members and the responsibilities that can come with this.

Family counselling focuses on understanding patterns within the family and supporting more effective ways of communicating and responding over time.  This may also include supporting relationships between parents and children, particularly where behaviour, emotional regulation, or communication has become difficult.

Common reasons families seek counselling

Family counselling may help with:

  • Ongoing conflict or communication difficulties

  • Emotional distance or disconnection

  • Parenting challenges

  • Blended family adjustments

  • Separation and co-parenting arrangements

  • Family dynamics affecting a child or adolescent

When to consider family counselling

You may wish to consider counselling if:

  • Communication feels strained or unproductive

  • Conflict is ongoing or difficult to resolve

  • Relationships feel disconnected

  • Changes within the family are creating tension

Often, families notice these patterns becoming more frequent or harder to resolve over time.

Family counselling for parents and children in the Sutherland Shire

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors work with families across the Sutherland Shire. This may include working with parents and children together, or alongside individual support such as child behaviour therapy, adolescent counselling, or anxiety counselling, depending on what is happening within the family.

Therapy focuses on understanding patterns within the family and working in a way that feels manageable and appropriate for everyone involved. Our clinicians draw on evidence-based approaches, including systems theory, attachment-informed approaches and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), to support clearer communication, boundaries, and relationships over time.

This may also sit alongside child and adolescent therapy or individual counselling, depending on what is needed within the family.
