What does an ASD assessment involve?

Our autism assessment follows a structured, evidence-based diagnostic process completed over three appointments across approximately four to six weeks.

 

The assessment includes:

• clinical interviews with your teenager and parent or caregiver

• detailed developmental history

• standardised autism assessment measures

• exploration of communication, social interaction, sensory experiences, routines and interests

• review of school, home and everyday functioning

• review of previous reports where available

• teacher questionnaires or information from school where clinically appropriate

• the ADOS-2, where clinically indicated and appropriate

 

Following the assessment, you will receive:

• a comprehensive written report outlining the assessment findings and diagnostic conclusions

• individualised recommendations for home, school and future supports

• a feedback appointment to discuss the findings and answer any questions

 

Parent and school involvement

Parents or caregivers play an important role throughout the assessment process.

Your knowledge of your teenager's early development, communication style and everyday experiences helps build a complete understanding of their presentation. Where appropriate, and with your consent, we may also seek information from your teenager's school to understand how they are managing across different environments.

Telehealth autism assessments

Many components of the assessment can be completed via secure telehealth.

 

Where particular assessment measures require in-person observation, your psychologist will discuss this with you before the assessment begins and explain the most appropriate assessment pathway for your teenager.

 

Assessment fee

The fee for a comprehensive autism assessment for teenagers is $1,800.

 

The assessment fee includes:

• two assessment appointments

• evidence-based assessment measures

• comprehensive diagnostic report

• personalised recommendations

• feedback appointment with your psychologist

 

Some young people under 25 years of age may be eligible for Medicare rebates for part of the assessment when referred under the Medicare Complex Neurodevelopmental Disorder assessment pathway. Eligibility depends on the referral and Medicare criteria. Our Client Care Team can advise whether this pathway may apply before you book your assessment.

 

What happens after the assessment?

 

Following the assessment, we'll meet with you to discuss the findings, explain the recommendations and answer any questions you or your teenager may have. Our aim is to help you understand how the assessment findings relate to your teenager's everyday experiences and what supports may be helpful moving forward.

 

Depending on the outcome of the assessment, some families choose to continue with autism therapy to help their teenager better understand their communication style, navigate social relationships, manage anxiety where present, and build on their strengths. Where appropriate, we can also provide guidance regarding school supports and referral pathways.
