Counselling for Autism
in Menai and the Sutherland Shire

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is a neurodevelopmental condition that can influence communication, sensory processing, social interaction, emotional regulation and executive functioning.

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors provide neurodiversity-affirming, evidence-informed autism therapy for children, adolescents and adults across the Sutherland Shire and surrounding suburbs. Sessions are available in person at our Menai practice and via secure online appointments across Australia.

Understanding Autism

Autism influences how a person processes information, experiences sensory input, and navigates communication and social interaction. These differences can affect how someone manages everyday demands at school, work, in relationships and across daily routines.

In therapy, this may include ongoing overwhelm, emotional regulation difficulties, challenges in communication or relationships, and fatigue from navigating environments that do not always align with how someone naturally thinks and responds.

Some people rely on structure and predictability, while finding transitions or change more difficult. Communication may be more direct or literal, and additional processing time may be needed in conversations or decision-making.

Autism also involves strengths. Many people experience strong attention to detail, sustained focus, and deep interests, alongside qualities such as honesty, reliability and persistence.

How autism may present

Autism can present in different ways, including differences in communication and social interaction, sensory sensitivities, emotional regulation difficulties, challenges with transitions, and executive functioning differences.

Many people also experience focused interests or deep engagement in specific areas. Autism may also overlap with experiences such as anxiety counselling, trauma, or patterns associated with ADHD therapy.

Autism Across the Lifespan

Autism presents differently depending on age, environment and life stage.

In children, therapy often focuses on emotional regulation, communication and navigating everyday environments, often alongside parents or caregivers.

In adolescents, therapy may centre on identity, school demands, friendships and increasing independence, alongside managing overwhelm and emotional intensity.

In adults, therapy often focuses on sensory experiences, relationships, workplace demands and executive functioning. Many adults seek autism therapy after recognising longstanding patterns that have impacted different areas of life.

When to Consider Autism Therapy

You may consider therapy if autism is affecting day-to-day life, relationships or communication, contributing to emotional dysregulation, making transitions difficult, or leading to ongoing overwhelm or burnout.

Many people seek autism therapy to better understand these patterns and develop more sustainable ways of managing daily life.
