Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Psychological Therapy in Menai and the Sutherland Shire

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors provide neurodiversity-affirming, evidence-informed autism therapy for children, adolescents and adults across the Sutherland Shire and southern Sydney. Sessions are available in person at our Menai practice and via secure online appointments across Australia.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental difference that can influence communication, sensory processing, social interaction, emotional regulation and executive functioning. Therapy recognises and respects each person’s strengths, preferences and lived experience.

Autism may present with:

  • sensory sensitivities or sensory overwhelm

  • differences in communication or social interaction

  • difficulty with emotional regulation

  • challenges with transitions or change

  • executive functioning differences

  • intense interests or focused passions

Autism often co-occurs with experiences such as ADHD, Anxiety, Trauma, or Eating Disorders.

Autism Across the Lifespan

In children, therapy may support emotional regulation, communication skills and adaptive functioning. Sessions often incorporate play-based and creative approaches to provide developmentally appropriate ways of building connection and confidence.

In adolescents, therapy may focus on identity development, school transitions, friendship dynamics and increasing independence.

In adults, therapy may explore sensory experiences, relationships, workplace challenges and executive functioning strategies. Many adults seek assessment later in life after recognising lifelong patterns in communication or social interaction. We provide autism assessments for adults at our Menai practice.

Our Approach to Autism Therapy in Menai

Early identification can play an important role in development. Recognising autism in the early years allows therapy to strengthen communication, adaptive skills and emotional regulation in ways that respect each child’s comfort and sensory needs.

Some people with autism may also have questions relating to identity, gender or sexuality. You can learn more about our inclusive approach to therapy on our Inclusive Practice page.

Our clinicians provide psychoeducation and practical strategies to help individuals and families feel informed and confident. Where appropriate, we collaborate with schools, support coordinators and allied health professionals to support consistency across environments.

You can learn more about therapy options and adult autism assessments on our Our Services page.
