ADHD Therapy in the Sutherland Shire

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors provide ADHD therapy that is grounded in evidence-based practice and informed by experience working with ADHD across the lifespan.

ADHD is one part of a broader neurodiversity profile. You can learn more about our approach on our Neurodiversity page.

We regularly work with people seeking ADHD therapy in the Sutherland Shire, including children, adolescents and adults.

Therapy focuses on how ADHD is impacting your day-to-day life, including organisation, task initiation, emotional regulation and managing expectations at school, work or home.

Sessions are practical and collaborative, with a focus on developing strategies that are realistic to maintain over time. Our clinicians draw on evidence-based approaches, including CBT, ACT and DBT-informed therapies, depending on your needs and goals.

If you are seeking a formal diagnosis, we also offer Adult ADHD assessment. We regularly work with people seeking ADHD therapy in the Sutherland Shire and surrounding areas, including those looking for support close to home.

What does ADHD therapy involve?

ADHD therapy focuses on understanding how attention, emotional regulation and executive functioning are showing up in everyday life. Sessions focus on practical strategies for organisation, task initiation, emotional regulation and managing overwhelm in everyday life.

Therapy may also involve understanding patterns such as burnout, self-criticism or relationship difficulties, and developing strategies that are realistic and sustainable over time.

For children and adolescents, ADHD therapy may include working with parents to support routines, consistency and emotional regulation, often alongside adolescent counselling. For adults, ADHD therapy often focuses on managing competing demands, reducing overwhelm, and improving organisation, planning and follow-through. You can also explore our adult counselling services for broader support.

How does ADHD present?

ADHD can present in different ways, including difficulty sustaining attention, disorganisation, overwhelm, impulsivity and emotional reactivity. People may also experience challenges with task completion, frustration tolerance and sensitivity to criticism.

ADHD often overlaps with anxiety, low mood, burnout and difficulties in relationships or learning. Where relevant, therapy may also draw on approaches used in emotional regulation therapy.

ADHD Across the Lifespan

ADHD can look different across stages of life, shaped by changing demands and environments.

In children, it may present as high energy, difficulty following instructions, emotional outbursts or challenges at school.

In adolescents, ADHD often becomes more noticeable through increasing academic pressure, difficulties with organisation and time management, and heightened emotional intensity.

In adults, ADHD may show up as ongoing overwhelm, difficulty managing responsibilities, or longstanding frustration despite effort.

ADHD in women and girls is often under-recognised and may present differently, with fewer obvious behavioural signs and more internal experiences such as emotional overwhelm and self-criticism.

Some people also explore differences across neurodivergent experiences, including Autism.
