What is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based approach that focuses on changing how people relate to their thoughts and emotions, rather than trying to eliminate them. It is often used when people feel stuck in overthinking, self-criticism, anxiety, or efforts to avoid difficult feelings.
ACT works on the understanding that efforts to control or avoid difficult thoughts and emotions can make them more persistent. Therapy focuses on noticing these experiences without becoming caught up in them. Over time, reducing their impact on day-to-day life.
ACT is one of several evidence-based therapies used in counselling and may be recommended depending on your needs and goals.
What does ACT help with?
ACT is most commonly used for:
-
anxiety, chronic worry and overthinking
-
stress and emotional overwhelm
-
low mood
-
difficulties with self-criticism
-
building psychological flexibility alongside other therapy
ACT is often used alongside other approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, eating disorder counselling, or relationship counselling, depending on each person's presentation.
