Neurodiversity-Affirming Therapy
in Menai and the Sutherland Shire
Neurodiversity recognises that people think, learn, and respond in different ways. These differences can influence attention, emotions and relationships across everyday life.
At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors provide neurodiversity-affirming therapy for children, adolescents and adults across the Sutherland Shire and surrounding suburbs. Our clinicians have experience working with a range of neurodivergent presentations, including ADHD and autism, and focus on practical, respectful and individualised care.
Understanding neurodiversity
Neurodiversity describes the different ways people’s brains work. There is no single “correct” way of thinking, learning or responding. Instead, people experience and process the world in ways that reflect both strengths and challenges.
This may include ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia, and differences in attention, learning and emotional regulation. These patterns can influence how someone navigates school, work, relationships and daily demands.
At times, difficulties can arise when there is a mismatch between a person’s natural way of thinking and the expectations placed on them. This can contribute to overwhelm, emotional distress or challenges with consistency over time.
A neuro-affirming approach
Our approach is neuro-affirming. This means differences are understood in context, rather than viewed as something to be fixed.
Therapy focuses on building understanding, supporting emotional regulation, and developing practical strategies that align with how each person thinks and functions. This may include working with environments, expectations and patterns that impact day-to-day life.
How we work
Therapy is tailored to each person, their goals and their context. This may include:
-
Supporting emotional regulation and managing overwhelm
-
Understanding attention and executive functioning patterns
-
Navigating school, work and daily demands
-
Reducing shame and self-criticism
-
Improving communication and relationships
-
Working with parents to support their child
The focus is on identifying what is getting in the way and developing practical, sustainable strategies. Our clinicians draw on a range of evidence-based therapies depending on individual needs.
ADHD
ADHD involves differences in attention and executive functioning, which can impact organisation, emotional regulation and task completion.
Therapy focuses on building understanding, supporting emotional regulation, and developing practical strategies that align with how each person thinks and functions.
These patterns are often explored further within ADHD therapy.
Autism and sensory differences
Some people experience differences in sensory processing, communication and social interaction, often associated with autism.
These experiences are often explored further within autism therapy.
Across the lifespan
Our psychologists and counsellors work with neurodiversity across the lifespan. In children, this may involve supporting emotional regulation and working alongside parents. In adolescents, this may include identity, relationships and increasing independence. In adults, therapy often focuses on longstanding patterns, workplace demands, relationships and self-concept.
