Therapy for Bulimia Nervosa
Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology | Menai and Sutherland Shire
Bulimia Nervosa is a complex and often misunderstood eating disorder, It involves repeated episodes of binge eating followed by behaviours intended to prevent weight gain, such as self-induced vomiting, over-exercising, or misuse of laxatives. Bulimia often develops after periods of restrictive dieting and is maintained by a combination of biological, psychological and sociocultural factors.
Unlike some other eating disorders, bulimia may not result in noticeable weight changes, which can make it difficult to recognise and delay access to support. Early recognition and professional intervention are essential to reduce the physical and emotional effects and to support long-term recovery.
Since 2017, Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai has provided compassionate, evidence-based therapy for bulimia and related eating disorders throughout the Sutherland Shire and Sydney. Our clinicians are credentialed with the Australian and New Zealand Academy for Eating Disorders (ANZAED) and bring many years of experience supporting adolescents and adults living with complex eating and body-image challenges.
Common signs of bulimia may include:
-
Strict or rigid food rules
-
Preoccupation with food, weight or body image
-
Avoiding meals with others
-
Repeated trips to the bathroom after eating
Therapy for bulimia at Evolving Minds is individualised and addresses both the behavioural patterns and emotional drivers that maintain the cycle of bingeing and compensatory behaviours. Treatment is trauma-informed, neuro-affirming, collaborative and paced to each person's needs.
Our psychologists and counsellors draw on a range of evidence-based therapies, including:
