Therapy for Body Image and Body Dysmorphia

Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology | Menai and Sutherland Shire

Body image plays an important role in how we see ourselves, how we connect with others, and how we move through the world. When body image distress leads to constant comparison, avoidance of social situations, or persistent dissatisfaction with appearance, it can affect confidence, relationships and overall wellbeing.

Since 2017, the clinical team at Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai has provided evidence-based therapy for body image difficulties and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) throughout the Sutherland Shire and across Sydney. Our experienced psychologists and counsellors support children, adolescents and adults to build self-acceptance, improve emotional regulation, and develop a more compassionate relationship with their body.

Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) involves a preoccupation with perceived flaws or imperfections in appearance, often features that others do not notice. This focus can lead to distress, repetitive checking behaviours, avoidance and social withdrawal. BDD frequently co-occurs with anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive symptoms and eating disorders.

Body image distress can develop for many reasons including bullying, trauma, perfectionism, low self-worth, or exposure to unrealistic appearance standards. Early, evidence-based support can make a meaningful difference, helping individuals recognise the patterns that maintain body dissatisfaction and begin to rebuild self-trust and confidence.

At Evolving Minds , therapy is compassionate, trauma-informed and neuro-affirming. Our clinicians include professionals credentialed with the Australian and New Zealand Academy for Eating Disorders (ANZAED) and draw on a range of evidence-based therapies, such as:

If you or your child are experiencing ongoing body image distress or body dysmorphia, therapy can help you develop insight, reduce self-criticism, and reconnect with what matters most. Sessions are available in person at our Menai practice in the Sutherland Shire, or online across Sydney and Australia
