Counselling for Self-Esteem and Confidence

Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology | Menai and Sutherland Shire

Self-esteem influences how we see ourselves, connect with others and manage life’s challenges. When self-esteem is low, it can contribute to worry, self-doubt, sadness and difficulty making decisions. Many people describe feeling not good enough, overly self-critical, or unsure of their strengths, which can affect relationships, school,  work and our overall sense of self.

Low self-esteem can also be linked to anxiety, depression, eating disorders, school avoidance, personality disorders, perfectionism and challenges with identity or emotional expression. These experiences can make it harder to recognise personal strengths or feel confident navigating everyday situations.

Healthy self-esteem and confidence develops when people can see themselves in a realistic and encouraging way. It helps with emotional stability, decision-making and confidence. Through therapy, children, adolescents and adults can learn to notice unhelpful thoughts, understand their strengths and build confidence at a pace that feels manageable.

At Evolving Minds Counselling and Psychology in Menai, our psychologists and counsellors provide self-esteem counselling for children, adolescents, adults and older adults, experiencing low self-esteem. We provide a calm, non-judgemental, neuro-affirming and trauma-informed space to explore negative thinking patterns, understand emotional triggers and develop a more grounded relationship with self. We work with individuals across the Sutherland Shire, including Bangor, Illawong, Alfords Point, Barden Ridge, Engadine, Woronora Heights, Sylvania, Kirrawee, Gymea, Miranda and Caringbah.

Our clinicians draw on evidence-based therapies that help people develop confidence, self-awareness and emotional clarity. These may include:

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)
Emotion Focused Therapy
• Mindfulness-Based Therapy
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
Schema Therapy
DBT-informed skills
• Strengths-based and compassion-focused approaches
Play and Art Therapy for children and adolescents

Sessions are guided by each person’s goals and pace. Counselling focuses on understanding the beliefs and experiences that influence self-esteem and introducing practical strategies that help individuals recognise strengths, build confidence and develop a kinder relationship with themselves.

Counselling is available in-person at our Menai practice or online for clients across Sydney.
